The field of Global China Studies has become a growth industry in scholarship and journalism, in tandem with China’s outward expansion and engagement in all forms of power and influence. This event consists of two presentations. Ching Kwan Lee will delineate two broad approaches to global China — the grand and the granular — and discuss lessons and agendas of the global China literature. As an example on how to do global China studies, Carlos Oya will introduce his new book on China’s impact on African industrialization , where he explores the potential and real consequences of China's growing engagements in Africa for their industrialization aspirations, through a labour lens, and with a special emphasis on policy agency and variation across African contexts. About the speakers: Ching Kwan Lee is a professor of sociology at the University of California-Los Angeles and author of three award-winning monographs on contemporary and global China, including The Specter of Global China. Her most recent book is Forever Hong Kong: A Global City’s Decolonization Struggle (Harvard 2025). Carlos Oya is professor of political economy of development at SOAS University of London and author of several recent publications on Africa-China relations, labour outcomes, and structural transformation dynamics in Africa. Chair: Naomi Hossain, Professor, Department of Development Studies, SOAS University of London
