This tiny, brass microscope was manufactured around 1785, and it was used for studying plants and other natural specimens in the field. Supremely portable, it is only about 2.5 inches tall and 1.4 inches across (63 x 35 millimeters). Miniature tweezers, a pin probe, and a scalpel slot into the body of the instrument, which all fit conveniently into a maroon, velvet-lined case. The case’s label identifies Henry Sykes, a British-born instrument maker who worked in Paris and originally sold the microscope. The instrument was designed by William Withering (1741-1799) - an English botanist, geologist, chemist, and physician. Withering is famous for studying the use of extracts from digitalis (foxglove) to treat dropsy. To use this little wonder, place a specimen on the middle of its three rings and then study it through the glass lens in the top ring. Adjust the middle ring to focus the image and, should you need it, the kit includes an extra hand magnifier in its base. @yalepeabody on Twitter instagram.com/yalepeabodymuseum/ facebook.com/YalePeabodyMuseum/ peabody.yale.edu #Microscopes #History #Yale
