Remember when I said that SCORPION's level for this year's Haunted Level Design Contest delivered, unlike the one he made for the one in 2008? Well, this is it. Artifact Chamber. Out of all the haunted levels I've played so far, this one is my favorite. While not as gory as The Haunt, you don't really need blood to make something scary. This stage just does everything right. It's set in a creepy cave, not unlike the interior of Crystal Mountain in The Crater, or the ever-so-disturbing level in The Fourth Sector called ???. Let's just say, the caves that shelter the Shadow. I do think that this cave system is even scarier than that though. You might remember the Orb of Darkness as the entity that emerged from an enraged Scorpion in the final level of the Fourth Sector. The Orb of Sloth is another character from the Devious Four Chronicles. I won't say what member of the D4 that He became, but your first guess will most likely be right. This one will appear somewhere in the maze, but it can't be fought. This level does have a boss, but you'll have to get out of the pit first. You have tunnel vision for most of the first half, kind of like the dark dungeons in Pokemon games (I'm thinking of Hoenn's Victory Road as well as Rock Tunnel and Cave of Origin). The graphics here remind me a bit of Crystal Mountain's caves. The music made the creepy atmosphere even more scary, and even the level design is cryptic. It starts out simple enough, but that will change around the 1:20 mark. At this point, the goal is to find your way back up the pit you just fell in. The level turns into a giant maze, and becomes very confusing. There are multiple dead ends, most of which all just take you back to the same place. In one instance though, there is just what appears to be a dead end, but is actually the way forward. First time I played this level, I was wondering what to do for a very long time until I figured that out. Also, there are screamers in this level, so if you haven't played this level already, this video probably will scare you. I think most of the screamers were removed, but one remains. That one occurs just before the right path. Once you're out of the pit, go back up the corridor you went down before. Once you reach the obelisk, you'll find that it has been opened, and you can continue to the end of the stage. The Orb of Darkness is much harder to fight than he was in The Fourth Sector, because of the other sprites in the area. Each time you attack the orb, another one comes in. Other than that, the strategy is the same as before. Once you get outside of the cave, the level is over. Artifact Chamber is amazing! It placed pretty high in the HLDC, if I remember correctly, and it sure deserved to. Can't wait to continue the Haunted Level series so I can record levels like this one and The Haunt! At some point you will see me play this level again, because a slightly altered version of Artifact Chamber is going to appear in the last major hack in the series; The Four Orbs. All I have to say is that if this level is anything to expect from that game, then you can consider The Four Orbs one of the hacks I'm really looking forward to.
