Launching into the Hemp Industry | IGTV | Attending the 2018 Cannabis Media Summit in New York City

When I got into the city of Brooklyn, I dropped my bag off at my Air BnB and soon realized that I was going to get along with my host, Fabio, super well. We connected on a few levels and before he knew it, I was showing him Emjayze CBD hemp joints. He loved the product and followed Emjayze on IG right away. Rodney, my partner in NY, met up with me soon after I dropped my bag off and we headed into the city. I was on running just a couple hours of sleep from the past two nights but I had the energy of NY and the excitement of learning a new industry all in front of me to keep me going. I arrived at the Cannabis Media Summit in the greatest city in the world and was able to get in right away. Upon arriving, I sat down for a panel on “Starting a Cannabis Media Company”. It was interesting to listen and take video of the panelists. The panelists were all black and I could hear from them that people of color are still under represented in the cannabis industry. I took a few notes during this panel- media companies are making money through sponsored content, events, and advertisements. To get Rodney involved in the NYC cannabis market is ideal because he is African American and he is articulate, he understands business, and is interested in the benefits of cannabis. Next up was Dan Adams, of the Boston Globe, he hosted a presentation called, “Getting the Scoop”. Dan was entertaining, punctual, and delivered a great recap of the events and news surrounding Massachusetts recent legalization of recreational cannabis. Dan has a weekly newsletter which I will link to below This brings me to an interesting point, there was a significant divide, or a split in how the panelists referred to the plant. Some used slang terms like marijuana, pot, or weed. Others referred to it by it’s proper name - Cannabis. I found myself frequently stopping to correct myself from using the slang terms that I have been familiar with since I was barely a teenager. I’m now starting to use the proper name, Cannabis, when I refer to the plant. Dan was an interesting presenter: he spoke about who will profit off this industry, reporting objectively, and fact gathering. Dan believes the job of journalism is not to give voice to the powerful but to give voice to the voiceless. He also said he seeks out authentic voices. He lists the challenges in the industry as: 1) Federal Law 2) Potential Interest Waning 3) Industry Influence In the future he would like to see a society of Professional Cannabis and encourage more diversity in Cannabis reporting. The event broke at lunch and I was able to get Rodney into the event at this time. I had found an extra name tag in the coat room. Over lunch I met John Gilstrap, COO of Hudson Hemp. We had a great conversation and I was able to share with him information about our CBD and the rise of Botanical shops. The majority of the attendees were journalists and public relations folks so the conversation often went back & forth between their two sides. I met Janet Burns, a freelance journalist, who focuses on the cannabis industry. Rodney was interested in learning more about the industry and he had a great time at the media summit. As we were riding up the elevator we were standing next to two very important people in the industry. David Tran, founder of Dope Magazine, and Rylie Maedler, a major reason why there is legal medical cannabis in the state of Delaware. Both David and Rylie were apart of the keynote presentation, which was hosted after lunch. Rylie opened up the keynote by sharing her touching story. In 2013 she was diagnosed with a cancer like tumor under her face. An extremely serious health challenge. She was only seven or eight years old during this time and the tumor was disintegrating her entire face. She was going to be disfigured if she were to live. They removed a 1/4 of her face and the CT scan looked like a bomb went off. • Did you know cannabis treatments help with benign brain tumors? • There are over 100 peer reviewed studies that show cannabis can help cure cancer. As a young child Rylie was started on CBD, THC, and THC-A treatments. Rylie began having seizures so she used THC-A to slow down the seizures. Rylie didn’t have chemotherapy treatment and was young enough for her body to regrow tissue. But she’s the only one who has had this disease and treated it with Cannabis. The doctors were shocked by her results and wanted to know what type of treatment she was receiving at home. In third grade her Mom explained to Rylie what her “medicine” was. Years later, Rylie’s law was passed in the state of Delaware. The law was created to allow for CBD, whole plant with THC in it, and THC-A to be taken as a medicine. It was passed unanimously due to Rylie’s unbelievable story. You look at Rylie, and you would never believe she went through so much. Cannabis helped cure her tumors and disease.
