Unconjugated bilirubin is a lipid-soluble molecule that is insoluble in aqueous solutions and is therefore bound to albumin for transport to the liver, where it is ultimately conjugated by UDP-glucuronyl-transferase. Conditions that cause an unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia are either due to an increased breakdown of RBCs or a decreased conjugation of bilirubin. Conditions that cause a conjugated hyperbilirubinemia are either due to a deficiency of a canalicular membrane transporter or a blockage of the bile ducts. Unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia will cause jaundice (yellow pigmentation of the skin) whereas conjugated hyperbilirubinemia will cause pale stools and dark urine. #hememetabolism #hemecatabolism #jaundice #jaundicetreatment #bilirubin #bilirubinmetabolism #fmgejan2023 #mbbslectures #nationalexitexam #usmlepreparation #nationalexittest #neetpg #usmlestep1 #fmge #usmle #medicalstudent #medicalbiochemistry #medicaleducation #medicalstudents #medicalcollege #medicalstudentlife
