Closer to You by Veronica May WRITER: Kyle Lawrence Wright INT. LIVING ROOM – MORNING A small, modest home. A GRANDMOTHER (60s) sits in a worn LA-Z-BOY, silent and still, her face hollow, distant, staring at the television with no real interest. Across the room, her DAUGHTER (early 30s), exhausted and disheveled, bottle-feeds an INFANT at the dining table. A TODDLER colors nearby, unaware of the tension. Bills are scattered. A laptop is open—emails, spreadsheets, chaos. From the hallway, her HUSBAND (30s), dressed in construction gear, rushes through. He grabs his hard hat on the fly. DAUGHTER (quickly, almost begging) When will you be home? The Husband doesn't answer. He’s out the door. The Daughter sighs. She slumps in her chair. The baby starts to fuss. She stands, juggling the baby in one arm, reaching for the toddler’s hand with the other. As she walks past the recliner, she glances at her mother. Their eyes meet. The Grandmother offers a faint, apologetic smile. The Daughter just shakes her head, disappointed. She disappears down the hallway. The Grandmother shifts in her chair, grimacing. She tries to stand— —but pain seizes her leg. She collapses back, grabbing her thigh, breathing hard. INT. CAR – DAY The Grandmother sits in the passenger seat, same defeated expression. Her Daughter rushes into the driver’s side, buckling in. She glances at the GPS: ETA: 1 hour 30 minutes. She exhales, grips the wheel, and drives. EXT. OFFICE BUILDING – DAY The car pulls up. The Daughter jumps out and rushes to the glass doors—locked. She knocks. Tugs. Peers inside. Nothing. No one. From the Grandmother’s POV inside the car: The Daughter turns her back to the door and slowly sinks to the ground, crumpling. She covers her face and cries—quiet, hopeless sobs. The Grandmother watches, helpless. INT. LIVING ROOM – NIGHT The house is dim. The TV glows softly. The Grandmother sits alone in her recliner. Her Daughter is asleep on the couch, laptop open, mid-email. She’s completely drained. The Grandmother glances at her, then down at her phone. ON PHONE: A website— www.NHCare.org. She scrolls. See all the services and support and smiling faces. Her expression shifts—something like hope flickers in her eyes. Pediatric and Gen Med Services/Health Center, the PACE program. All the things she and her family needs are here. She looks back at her daughter, asleep. INT. Neighborhood Healthcare CENTER – DAY Bright, inviting interior. The Daughter enters, pushing a stroller. Toddler by one hand. Supporting her mother with the other. They pause. Take it in. A STAFF MEMBER approaches, welcoming. MONTAGE — VARIOUS Neighborhood SERVICES: — Counseling sessions. — Physical therapy for the Grandmother. — Dental care for the kids. — Paperwork assistance. — Check-ups. — PACE Shuttle dropping off grandma back at the house (Or dropping her off at Neighborhood Healthcare). (Each scene shows different outfits—time is passing.) INT. LIVING ROOM – DAY The Grandmother again tries to stand from the recliner. Struggles. Still can’t. Her eyes fall on a red-and-black flannel shirt draped over the chair—the same one her daughter wore when she collapsed on the couch. She picks it up. Holds it to her chest. Strength returns to her face. MONTAGE CONTINUES: — Physical therapy intensifies. — A trainer encourages. — The Grandmother takes her first unassisted step. (Close of hurt leg taking first step, cut to black) INT. BEDROOM – MORNING The Daughter wakes. She stretches. Heads to the kids’ room. Empty beds. INT. LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS The recliner is empty. Confused, the Daughter looks around. She hears something—laughter. EXT. FRONTYARD – CONTINUOUS The Grandmother plays with the children. There are bubbles in the air, toys everywhere, joy. The Daughter steps outside, stunned. Frozen. The Grandmother looks up. Their eyes meet. Time stops. For the first time... the Daughter smiles. A tear escapes. She walks forward. They embrace—finally, fully, forgiving. INT. STAGE – EVENING Match cut to an empty theater, with the daughter and grandmother still embracing, as they embrace, paddles begin to raise in the audience. Everyone supports the two as all paddles raise. They continue to hug and embrace, as if no one else is there. FADE OUT
