Recorded: 11 Oct 2025, Don Bosco Basel © Joseph Haydn Foundation Basel, Haydn2032 © Stuart Franklin, Magnum Photos Project No. 23 revisits themes from Hornsignal (Project No. 13, 2020). Central to the programme is Symphony No. 72 in D major (1763–65), in which Haydn makes brilliant use of flute and four horns. It is paired with Symphony No. 41 in C major, a sister work to Maria Theresia (No. 48), noted for its demanding horn parts in “high C.” The title La Chasse (“The Hunt”) comes from Symphony No. 73, whose finale—originally the overture to La fedeltà premiata (1781)—incorporates the traditional hunting call l’ancienne vue. The programme also includes Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto “La Caccia” from Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione (1725), performed by Dmitry Smirnov, who previously appeared in Project No. 17 Per il Luigi. Haydn2032 In the lead-up to the 300th anniversary of Joseph Haydn's birth in 2032, the Joseph Haydn Foundation in Basel is organising, producing and financing the performance and recording of all 107 of the composer's symphonies by Il Giardino Armonico and Basel Chamber Orchestra under the artistic direction of Giovanni Antonini, one of the most highly-respected specialists in baroque, early classical and classical music, with its project Haydn2032. The recordings are released on CD and in a luxury vinyl collector's edition in book form. The French group Outhere Music / Alpha Classis acts as partner for the recordings. The first seventeen volumes have been released on CD and 13 volumes on vinyl with two further volumes planned for release every year.
