It primarily supplies sensory innervation to the skin of the neck, the posterior scalp, and portions of the shoulder, as well as motor innervation to some neck muscles (e.g., infrahyoid muscles) 🩺💪. The cutaneous branches (lesser occipital nerve, great auricular nerve, transverse cervical nerve, and supraclavicular nerves) emerge around the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid, providing sensory supply to the lateral neck, lower ear, and the upper chest region 🎯✨. The ansa cervicalis (loop formed by contributions from C1 to C3) innervates the infrahyoid (strap) muscles, aiding in swallowing and speech production 🗣️👅. Additionally, C1 fibers hitchhike briefly with the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) before branching off to form part of the ansa cervicalis or to supply the geniohyoid and thyrohyoid muscles 🏆🧠. The phrenic nerve (C3, C4, and C5) is closely related, descending along the anterior scalene to supply the diaphragm, playing a critical role in respiration 🫁🔥.
