The Times Showband music video for their 1968 Irish hit 'What Made Milwaukee Famous' featuring Jimmy Swarbrigg on vocals. The Times Showband were a breakaway group from the internationally successful Joe Dolan and The Drifters. The Drifters continued with brothers Joe and Ben Dolan and the new band led by Tommy Swarbrigg set about completing their line-up. Tommy invited his brother, Jimmy, then living in London, to front the band and they added Sean Kenny (formerly with The Hi-Lows) on guitar and Gene Bannon (an ex-member of The Millionaires) on tenor sax. The original band line-up consisted of Jimmy and Tommy Swarbrigg (vocals and trumpet respectively), together with Sean Kenny (guitar), Jimmy Horan (bass), Sid Aughey (drums), Des Doherty (keyboards), Gene Bannon (saxophone), and Joe Gilheaney (trombone). On August 17th, 1968 The Times played their first ever gig at The Ierne Ballroom, Parnell Square, Dublin. Later that year they recorded 'What Made Milwaukee Famous' in Eamonn Andrews Studios, Dublin and made this promotional video. Shot on an old 16mm Bolex cine camera it was later blown up to 35mm and shown in cinemas throughout Ireland. As 'The Swarbriggs' the brothers represented Ireland at the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm, Sweden with 'That's What Friends Are For'. As 'The Swarbriggs Plus Two', with Nicola Kerr and Alma Carroll, they competed again in 1977 with 'It's Nice To Be In Love Again'. The brothers wrote both songs. They also scored numerous other Top 20 Chart hit singles in Ireland during the 1970s, including 'Joanne' (a No.1 hit in 1976), 'Looking Through The Eyes Of A Beautiful Girl', 'If Ma Could See Me Now', 'Funny', and many more. They had more than twenty Top 20 Chart entries through the 70's, all self-composed. ‘What's Make Milwaukee Famous’ was composed in 1968 by Glen Sutton for Jerry Lee Lewis. Sutton was then a staff producer at Columbia Records and an aspiring song writer. Written in a few hours and under pressure, Sutton took inspiration from a newspaper ad for The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. of Milwaukee whose slogan was ‘The beer that made Milwaukee famous’ and added the ‘loser’ twist. Lewis recorded it the following day and it took him to No. 10 on Billboard’s Country Chart. See more about the song at https://bit.ly/2ugxfb1.
