8. Finding strength to keep kesh/hair Welcome to ‘The power of hair’ playlist from SHARE Charity sevadaars. These short video clips are designed to help us reflect on the beauty and power of hair otherwise known as kesh in Sikhism. These are an educational resource produced to acknowledge the purpose as to why kesh/hair is kept and the impact of removing it from the body. It is not our intention to offend anyone, or to make anyone feel uncomfortable in their life choices but instead, for us all to appreciate a clearer understanding of what happens to the body and mind because of removing or keeping kesh/hair. Finding strength to keep kesh/hair Within Emperor Mir Manu’s jail, despite the difficulties of mother’s cutting their children and forced to wear as necklaces instead of converting to Islam, the mother’s had accepted what God had preordained. In the same way, we should accept our hair as a gift from God. Ardas, a Sikh prayer– never underestimate the power of ardas Shaheed Bhai Taru Singh did a powerful ardaas for kesh/hair not to be cut by moguls who wanted to convert him to Islam. The attempt to cut his kesh/hair had failed as the scissors became futile. Therefore, his scalp was removed. More recently, a similar situation happened to Bhai Preetam Singh, whereby during his seva in looking after a neglected Gurdwara Sahib in Pakistan, Muslims in the area challenged the power of his kesh/hair by trying to cut it. Again, Bhai Sahib’s hair transformed into iron and the Muslims had fled. Sangat is ‘true congregation in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib Jee’, sangat is important in progressing spiritually. By keeping kesh/hair, a devout Sikh has the aims of meeting Vaheguru and thus entering a state of eternal happiness and contentment. Kesh/hair does not and should not limit anyone’s success in life, but rather, it helps by providing strength to tackle any and all kinds of challenges. A khanga, a wooden comb, is one of the 5 articles of faith for baptised Sikhs. There are many advantages of using a wooden comb instead of plastic including the generation of oil as required for moisture and promoting hair growth through massaging the scalp. The combing of kesh/hair twice a day also aids with positive mental health and wellbeing. Urine has usually been used as the standard sample for drug testing, research has revealed that using hair/kesh for drug testing instead is more effective. Hair/kesh provides more long-term information about drug abuse history for months compared to urine and blood which lasts for days. As we move into the space era and space travel becomes more common, will humans be more accepting to the different appearances of aliens, or will they too be subjected to the cruelness of our society?
