(16 Aug 1996) English/Nat Bob Dole accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday night - vowing to restore core values of faith and trust to the U-S government. Some 50,000 balloons and sparkling confetti filled the San Diego Convention Centre as 20,000 Republicans helped Dole celebrate success in his third try for the nomination. Bob Dole entered the San Diego Convention Centre to 20,000 cheering fans on Thursday night. It was the last night of the convention, when Dole accepted the Republican party's nomination to run for president and gave the most important speech of his political career. The veteran 73-year old politician from Kansas started the night pointing out the advantages of age. He suggested that at the dawn of the 21st century, the cure to the nation's moral and social problems was a return to the values of his generation. SOUNDBITE: Age has its advantages. Let me be the bridge to an America that only the unknowing call myth. Let me the bridge to a time of tranquillity, faith and confidence in action, and to those who say it was never so, that America has not been better, I say you are wrong. And I know because I was there and I have seen it and I remember. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole Then he began to address one of the main issues in the race for the White House - the economy. SOUNDBITE: And a government that ceases control of the economy for the good of the people ends up ceasing control of the people for the good of the economy. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole He accused those running the government of being captive to elitists "who never sacrificed, never suffered." SOUNDBITE: It is demeaning to the nation that within the Clinton administration, a core of the elite who never grew up, never did anything real, never sacrificed, never suffered and never learned should have the power to fund with your earnings their dubious and self serving schemes. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole And the criticism of the Clinton administration continued. He promised to introduce a fairer tax code. SOUNDBITE: Working with Jack Kemp and the Republican congress, I will not be satisfied until we have reformed our entire tax code and made it fairer and flatter and simpler for the American people. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole Dole said Clinton raised taxes after promising to cut them. SOUNDBITE: The principle involved here is time honoured and true. And that is its your money, you shouldn't have to apologise for wanting to keep what you earn. SUPERCAPTION: Bob Dole And he added the government should apologise for taking too much from taxpayers. SOUNDBITE: To the contrary the government should apologise for taking too much of it. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole Dole then addressed another tough issue - immigration. SOUNDBITE: Let me speak about immigration. The right and obligation of a sovereign nation to control its borders is beyond debate. We should not have here a single illegal immigrant, but the question of immigration is broader than that and let me be specific. A family from Mexico arrived here this morning legally has as much right to the American dream as the direct descendants of the founding fathers. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole The candidate lambasted America's rising crime wave: SOUNDBITE: We are a nation paralysed by crime and it is time to end that in America. SUPER CAPTION: Bob Dole He also said Clinton had cut the military too deeply and undermined U-S credibility by placing American troops under United Nations command.
