The first time we met, she wore a beige polo, white sneakers so clean they squeaked, and a Bluetooth headset that may or may not have been connected to anything. “Welcome to the neighborhood,” she said, handing us a stapled packet that looked like it had footnotes. “Hope you’ve read the covenants.” My wife thanked her. My son, Timmy—ten years old, scooter enthusiast, jelly-stained hoodie—waved. Me? I just smiled and made a mental note: This woman collects fines like Pokémon cards. She “welcomed” us with a rules packet so thick I thought it came with a companion podcast. No toys on lawns. No flags in windows. No chalk art—"could resemble graffiti." I flipped to the back and muttered, “Does this thing have a sequel?” The next morning, Timmy rode his scooter up and down our cul-de-sac for exactly six minutes. Helmet on. Big grin. It was innocent. Joyful. The kind of moment you move to the suburbs for. Apparently, that was six minutes too long. Because when I went to get the mail later that day? There it was.
