I kid you not, a few years ago I sent out an email talking about the CAGED System and I got this disturbing reply. A subscriber sent over this strange looking poster that gave 5 reasons why the CAGED system ruins your playing. I literally started balling. It was so funny. I’ve never seen a bigger load of horse pucky. You see, most people – even those teaching CAGED – haven’t got a clue what it is or how to show students the entire framework for the neck. However, below I'm going to give each point a chance here, and give you my thoughts: 1) You will struggle to improvise guitar solos using the entire fretboard The whole point of CAGED is to unlock the entire fretboard? Everyone struggles with this in every method. There is no magic bullet. But CAGED is the closest I’ve ever seen to one, and guitarists have been using it for 100s of years. 2) You will struggle to communicate with other musicians You don’t use CAGED to communicate with other musicians. CAGED is guitar specific lingo. In fact, I would argue the opposite. CAGED helps you think in different keys. Which only BETTER helps you communicate with other musicians. Because you can transpose. 3) Playing guitar with emotion becomes harder CAGED has nothing to do with playing guitar with emotion. CAGED is like the alphabet for the guitar neck. It’s like saying if you know the alphabet then writing emotional stories becomes harder. No it doesn’t it’s just a tool. 4) Your guitar solos will sound the same Again, back to the previous point, CAGED is like the alphabet. If you know the alphabet, you may use the same words and phrases over and over. But you'll still also need strategies for how to solo, and vocabulary to take you all the way. These are separate from the CAGED system itself. 5) The CAGED system is not compatible with most scales and modes This is a clear indicator they are only thinking of CAGED as “just the chords up and down the neck”. 👉Discover the 5 MUST-KNOW chords and scales to play in ANY style anywhere on the neck FREE PDF GUIDE→ https://www.jonmaclennan.com/fretboar...
