(5 Mar 2017) SONIA RYKIEL'S ECCENTRIC, JOYOUS COLLECTION Sonia Rykiel's artistic director Julie de Libran discovered that the French artist and wild child Niki de Saint Phalle was born the same year as the free-spirited Madame Rykiel, in 1930. That was the starting point for a particularly whimsical collection filled with color, texture, fur and feathers. True to Rykiel's Left Bank roots, the show took place at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where personalities from American actor Harry Hamlin (and his daughters) to French actress Olga Kurylenko sat front row. De Libran used real or fake fur on bulky coats and tactile scarves, while the season's new bag, "Le Niki," came decorated with faux fur and rivets. She subverted traditional fabrics such as tweed into patchwork and reimagined the house's iconic stripes as blazer suits and pyjama shirting. Sweaters were emblazoned with Niki de Saint Phalle's statement "Les Nanas du Pouvoir, meaning "Power Girls." And the shoes—flat or mid-heel boots and slippers—came with puffs of ostrich feathers, jewels, and bold patchwork. De Libran said the accessories were used to emphasized the whimsical aspect of the collection. "The shoes and bags were also accessories that for me are eccentric, and that's a way to show that accessory that can push an outfit, or that can create a bit of spirit, and fun and joy, and so that's what it was about."
