About Lofoten Islands Lofoten is an archipelago in Norway. This group of islands is a traditional district situated in the Norwegian county of Nordland. It has distinctive scenery such as dramatic mountains with remarkable peaks, the open sea with stunning sheltered bays, and beaches and untouched lands. The group islands lying off the mainland totally within the Arctic Circle, it comprises the southern end of the Lofoten-Vesterålen and includes the 5 main islands, namely Austvågøya, Gimsøya, Vestvågøya, Flakstadøya, and Moskenesøya extending 70 miles from north to south. The archipelago stretches through a length of about 110 miles. The Vesterålsfjorden, a broad and deep fjord, lies between Lofoten and the mainland. Composed of volcanic rocks such as gneiss and granite, the islands are the seriously eroded tops of a partially submerged range of mountains. The highest peak is Higravtinden which is 3,760 feet on Austvågøya. Also, two important towns, Svolvær and Leknes, are in the middle of the Lofoten islands, precisely on the island of Vestvågøya. Leknes is approximately 42 miles west of the town of Svolvær and 40 miles east of the village of Å in Moskenes. It is also about 105 miles north of the Arctic Circle and approximately 1,500 miles away from the North Pole. Lofoten islands experience one of the largest elevated temperature anomalies considering its high latitude. The second town, Svolvær is on Austvågøya. It is the major town and chief port of the islands. The population of Lofotens islands is currently estimated to be 24,500. Apart from the 5 main islands making up the archipelago connected by the E10 scenic route, there are two others, namely Værøy and Røst which are accessible by ferry from Moskenes. The islands that have been described as the most beautiful in the world occupy an area of 474 square miles. History of Lofoten Islands According to history by Robert M. and others, there is evidence that humans had settled in Lofoten as far back as 11,000 years ago. However, the earliest archaeological sites that have any real bearing on the history of the islands are only about 5,500 years old detailing the transition from the early to late Stone Age. Also, notable human activities such as Iron Age agriculture and livestock indicating significant human habitation are traceable to 250 BC. More remarkably, the islands have definitely and continuously been inhabited since, at least, 1120. Fishing has expectedly always been predominant on this island. Thus, not later than 1120, King Øystein reportedly built a church and lodgings for some fishermen near Kabelvåg, on Austvågøya. Fishing remain almost the only economic activity on the island until the late 19th century when tourism introduced some diversification on the islands. As cod and some haddock are the principal catch on the island for the fishery business, thousands of people would come from every nook and cranny of the Norwegian west coast to the island and its areas to land and process the cod catch during the spawning season stretching from February through April. Stockfish from Lofoten islands which have been dried without the use of salt in the winter wind and sun have been exported for centuries.
