A grazing stick helps producers know how much forage the herd needs and how large to make your paddocks. Logan Karcher, director of producer programs with Illinois Grazing Lands Coalition, walks through each calculation to help you determine the size of your paddocks and the stocking rate. 00:35 1️⃣ Step 1: Measure the average leaf height. You'll use half that amount for your calculations in order to keep an adequate amount of forage for coverage. 01:35 2️⃣ Step 2: Determine the percentage of forage density in the paddock. 02:10 3️⃣ Step 3: Formula: Calculating how much dry matter is available = of inches of plant leaf available to graze X Average pounds of dry matter 02:30 4️⃣ Step 4: Formula: Calculating pounds of grazing livestock = Average cow weight X Number of Head grazing 02:43 5️⃣ Step 5: Formula: Calculating pounds of dry matter needed for herd = Total pounds of livestock grazing X Expected % of body weight consumption 03:09 6️⃣ Step 6: Formula: Calculating number of acres in paddock size = Total dry matter needed for herd / Available dry matter per acre 03:497️⃣ Step 7: Formula: Calculating Stock Density = Total pounds of livestock / Number of acres needed per day 🎥 Check out our other how-to videos: / @ilglc 🌐 We offer free resources and conversation at the Grazing and Forage Hub: https://grazingforage.com/ 🙋Member Want to join others in your growing and grazing journey?
