MIT 24.908 Creole Language and Caribbean Identities, Spring 2017 View the complete course: https://ocw.mit.edu/24-908S17 Instructor: Michel DeGraff In this video, Michel DeGraff notes that discussions form the core of the course and shares strategies for facilitating meaningful conversations. License: Creative Commons BY-NC-SA More information at https://ocw.mit.edu/terms More courses at https://ocw.mit.edu Due to current limitations on YouTube, captions are “burned in” to these Haitian Creole videos. The YouTube caption system, which allows viewers to choose whether to display captions, does not include Haitian Creole on its menu of over 180 languages. This lack of support for Haitian Creole is unfortunate and ironic, as one goal of this course is to dismantle the devaluing of languages like Haitian Creole and their speakers. And it is all the more disappointing since Google (which owns YouTube) does include Haitian Creole in its Google Translate service, to which the course instructor (Michel DeGraff) and his colleagues at MIT and Haiti have contributed through a collaboration (http://news.mit.edu/2017/mit-haiti-go...) between Google and the MIT-Haiti Initiative (http://haiti.mit.edu). Michel DeGraff and the OCW team have requested that YouTube add Haitian Creole to its caption system, and look forward to a resolution soon. Akoz limitasyon nan YouTube konsènan soutit nan videyo, n oblije mete soutit yo dirèk dirèk nan vèsyon kreyòl yo. Lojisyèl pou soutit nan YouTube, ki pèmèt entènot yo chwazi si yo vle wè soutit yo, pa gen kreyòl ladan malgre lojisyèl YouTube la ofri plis pase 180 lang. Se regretan YouTube pa ofri opsyon soutit an kreyòl. Michel DeGraff ansanm ak OCW mande pou YouTube ajoute kreyòl nan sistèm soutit la. N espere pwoblèm sa a ava rezoud anvan ti poul fè dan.
