(9 Apr 1995) Spanish/Nat Peru's President Alberto Fujimori looks set to win today's general elections with an outright majority. Early exit polls showed Fujimori had captured 60 percent of the vote, well ahead of his nearest rival, former U.N. secretary general Javier Perez de Cuellar, with 26 per cent. While today's elections for president and congress were violence free, the poll has been marred by allegations of electoral fraud...allegations that Fujimori hotly denies. Buoyed by opinion polls predicting he would win a second term, Alberto Fujimori .. and his supporters were in a confident mood when he turned out to vote in the capital, Lima He arrived with his daughter Keiko Sofia who is acting First Lady because Fujimori and his wife Susana Higuchi are separated and political rivals. Despite his confident mood, the elections have been marred by accusations of electoral fraud, now believed to be much bigger than at first thought. According to Lima newspapers the fraud now involves as many as 600-thousand votes, 5 per cent of the electorate, because those arrested were filling in voter tally sheets, not individual ballot papers. However Fujimori dismissed the allegations, saying the poll was free and fair. SOUNDBITE: Spanish Upsound: Mr President do you think there's a possibility of electoral fraud. "The crowd has answered that question, the best warrantors of the transparency of this election are the Peruvian people themselves. Including all the electoral representatives of the parties. Like any other election held here in Peru before, the transparency of the election is guaranteed by the people and the national electoral board. I have had the opportunity to meet Mr Gaviria and he told me that there have been some questionable events, but those have been dealt with. The massive participation in the election is evidence of the people's confidence in the country. SUPER CAPTION: Alberto Fujimori, Peruvian President. If the exit polls are correct, and Fujimori wins an overall majority, he will be spared a run-off election against the candidate who comes second. His main opponent former UN Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar has focused his campaign on unemployment and poverty. But Perez de Cuellar appears not to have done enough to unseat the man credited with crushing the Maoist guerilla group Sendero Luminoso. His supporters say today's election, described as the most peaceful in 15 years, is proof that Fujimori is still as popular as ever.
