Nikhil Mali - The masterful dribbler with twinkling toes. Flair and trickery from the wing are still very much a rarity in Indian football, but Nikhil is one of those rare few who have that ability. Brought up in Pune, Nikhil played for DSK Shivajians in the under-18 I league where they qualified for the final round. Nikhil's dribbling is fantastic - he likes to maintain his width and stretch the defense while playing on the left side of the front three - and when he's left one on one with the full-back, he can go past the defender into the space, which immediately creates a numerical superiority for his team in the final third. While he can go on the outside, he can also come inside and get a shot off with his right - which gives another dimension to his game and makes it very difficult for defenders to read him. His dribbling Vector field is a perfect illustration of how he's equally effective going on the outside and cutting inside. Nikhil is always involved in linking up play - as you can see there's plenty of simple passes he plays in the opponents half - while also getting those all important assists. After playing in the Pune Super Division for 3 years while pursuing his degree, the 24-year old is now back on course to playing top level football - as he played for Techtro Swades United in the Himachal State league last december, and now - plays for Minerva Academy Football Club in the Punjab Super League, and Nikhil's performances have been highly impressive. In the Himachal State League and Punjab Super League Second Division combined, he has completed 40/48 dribbles and 11/12 through balls, and 15 ball recoveries. His presence from the left often opens up spaces and opportunities for his teammates, and he also has an eye for goal himself. In 7 games in the Punjab Super League Second Division including the qualifiers - Nikhil has scored 5 goals and has 6 assists to his name. No player from Pune has ever played in the Indian Super League, but with Nikhil's latest heroics and consistency, one wouldn't bet against him being the first.
