The Goulston Street Graffito was a chalk message written on a brick wall above a piece of Catherine Eddowes's apron, found on September 30th, 1888, Jack the Ripper's only presumed double homicide night. The misspelling of the term "Jews" still has people confused. Debate rages as to whether the author was himself Jewish and claiming the victim as his own or whether, more likely, the murderer was ranting about the influence of the recent wave of Jewish immigration to London in the 1880's. But if Jack the Ripper was indeed antisemetic, that was another thing he had in common with Degas. The famous artist radicalized in hatred as he aged and cut off lifelong friends when they simply said Dreyfuss, a falsely accused Jewish man in France, might not be guilty. (Google the Dreyfuss Affair for a strange rabbit hole about antisemitism in 19th Century France) I'm using my Degas as Jack the Ripper theory as inspiration for a fiction novel. The finished book will have a copious appendix to show what was fact and what was fictional story-glue. It remains an excellent piece of historical fiction that focuses on the lives of the victims. https://amzn.to/3AdyASc "Ripper: The Secret Life of Walter Sickert" by Patricia Cornwell https://amzn.to/3WNn0pw "Walter Sickert: A Life" by Matthew Sturgis https://amzn.to/3LR4ndZ "The Complete Jack the Ripper" by Donald Rumbelow https://amzn.to/3SBZJ7o
