Between 1941 and 1945, America built 2,710 Liberty Ships—the largest merchant fleet ever assembled. These ungainly cargo vessels won the Battle of the Atlantic, delivering 75 million tons of supplies to Allied nations. But when the war ended in 1945, over 2,400 ships sat idle in harbours worldwide. What followed was one of history's greatest disposal operations. The United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union competed for the most advanced vessels. Private companies bought hundreds at bargain prices. Foreign nations received them as aid to rebuild shattered economies. Yet within fifteen years, the vast majority had vanished—scrapped for steel, broken apart at sea, or mothballed in ghostly reserve fleets. This is the untold story of what happened to the ships that won the war, from the scramble to claim them in 1945 to the breaking yards that dismantled them by the hundreds. Of 2,710 built, only two survive operational today. Discover the race to capture, the systematic disposal, and the rare preservation of America's Liberty Ships. #WWII #NavalHistory #MaritimeHistory #MerchantMarine #PostWarHistory #ColdWar
