When was poison gas first used in World War 1? Well, the French actually tried tear gas first, but it was only used on a small scale. Then came the Germans with the first serious attempt against the Russians at the Battle of Bolimov. They launched a tear gas attack hoping to break the lines, but it was mostly ineffective as the cold froze the gas. But the Germans learned chemical weapons had potential. So on April 22nd, 1915, at the Second Battle of Ypres, they tried again, this time with something far deadlier: chlorine gas. After the usual artillery barrage, French troops braced for infantry. But instead a greenish-yellow cloud rolled across no man’s land. 167 tons of chlorine gas drifted into the Allied trenches. The French colonial troops began coughing, choking, and panicking as their lungs began to burn. Many fled, causing a four-mile-wide gap to open up in the Allied line. But the Germans weren’t even ready. Shocked by their own success, they hesitated and missed the chance to push forward.
