Preparing my forest for the climate - here's how it works

Monoculture exists in the garden, in the field and even in our forests, where spruce is almost exclusively planted. But climate change is here: heat and drought are taking a toll on the spruce. The soil acidifies, offers no habitat for earthworms or other organisms and can hardly store water. The forest therefore needs to be converted: away from spruce monoculture and towards a mixed forest with lots of fine hardwoods such as maple, hornbeam, white elm and lime. But spruce and fir can also be present in this mixed forest up to 50%, because these trees are particularly important for the construction industry because their wood is light, stable and tough. Forester Ludwig Pertl is committed to converting the forest. His most important goal: Through conversion, to achieve a forest floor that offers earthworms and other organisms a habitat and food. Such a soil can even protect against flooding because it can absorb and store water like a sponge during heavy rain. The plants in the forest benefit from the longer availability of water in the soil and the organic materials (leaves, dead wood) that are decomposed into mucus provide nutrients for the trees. Niko Storz, project manager in the Landsberg am Lech district office for district development and economic development - climate protection, is working on the LIFE Future Forest project, which promotes actual forest conversion.
