Students working through updated variations of Scissor and Naked Chokes from the Japanese Jiu-Jitsu Blue Belt Syllabus. Chapters 00:00 Intro 00:03 Demos 00:29 From a Straight Punch 01:27 Hook & Uppercut with Double Leg Take Down The Scissor and Naked Choke is a fundamental strangulation technique found within the Japanese Jujitsu syllabus, typically taught at intermediate level once students have developed control, balance, and an understanding of safety. The technique focuses on using correct body positioning and leverage rather than brute strength, reflecting the core principles of traditional jujitsu. The technique is commonly applied from a rear position, often following a throw, takedown, or transition to the ground. The defender positions themselves behind the opponent, placing one leg across the opponent’s waist or hips while the other leg scissoring behind to control posture and prevent escape. This scissor action stabilises the opponent, limits movement, and creates a strong base from which to apply the choke effectively. The naked choke element is applied using the arms without the assistance of clothing, making it suitable for both gi and no-gi situations. The forearm is placed across the opponent’s carotid arteries, with the elbow aligned beneath the chin. The opposite arm reinforces the choke by gripping the bicep or placing the hand behind the opponent’s head. Pressure is applied by squeezing the arms together while gently expanding the chest, restricting blood flow rather than crushing the windpipe. Correct head positioning is essential, with the defender keeping their head tight against the opponent to avoid counters. The legs maintain constant scissor pressure to prevent the opponent from turning or standing. Control, not aggression, is emphasised throughout the application. In training and grading, students are assessed on safe application, smooth entry, and awareness of tap signals. The Scissor and Naked Choke teaches key jujitsu concepts such as positional dominance, efficient use of leverage, and restraint. When applied correctly, it provides a decisive and controlled method of submission, suitable for self-defence, dojo practice, and syllabus progression.
