On 21 November 2016, one of the deadliest asthma events in history occurred in Melbourne, Australia. A sudden storm turned a warm summer evening into a medical emergency, with 11 people losing their lives and thousands of others left struggling to breathe — many of whom had never had asthma before. In this educational TEDx talk, Dr Kira Hughes, an alum of Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, explains the science behind thunderstorm asthma — a rare but deadly phenomenon that occurs when storms, pollen, and vulnerable populations collide. Drawing on years of research, and her own personal journey with asthma, Dr Hughes reveals why Australia — and Melbourne, in particular — is the global hotspot for these events, and why climate change is making them more frequent and severe and reveals the surprising link between hay fever and thunderstorm asthma risk This talk is not just about science — it’s about survival. If you have asthma, hay fever, or live in Australia, this is essential viewing. Watch now and learn how to breathe easy when the next storm hits. Dr Kira Hughes is an aerobiologist and award-winning science communicator passionate about helping researchers share their work and advocating for underrepresented groups in STEM. A Deakin University alumna, she is recognised as a Superstar of STEM by Science & Technology Australia and was the 2023 Deakin Three Minute Thesis People’s Choice Winner. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
