Please switch to 1.25/1.5x for better experience. Haloform reactions are important reaction of methyl ketone compounds. When compounds containing methyl ketone group are treated with halogens (Cl2, Br2 and I2) in presence of alkali, we get carboxylate ion and haloform as final product. The reaction is a base catalysed reaction. The reaction begins with abstraction of H-atom from alpha position relative to carbonyl carbon. As a result carboanion is generated which attacks on the halogen atom. Same sequence is repeated twice and finally we get carboxylate and haloform. If the reaction is carried out in presence of iodine, then iodoform is produced and it has a characteristic yellow color. This observation is thus can be used for the detection of methyl ketone group. Please go through the lecture and let me know if you have any questions or explanations that you may need.
