As the International Court of Justice (ICJ) convened merits hearings in the historic case of The Gambia v. Myanmar, this event provided an opportunity for reflection upon the significance and potential impact of progress in the case. The event highlighted voices of the Rohingya community and provided insight into the case’s meaning for international justice as well as the current, dire context for Rohingya in Myanmar and in the refugee camps in Bangladesh. This event also underscored the need for gender-sensitive justice and accountability for Rohingya women and girls, who have faced specific and disproportionate harms during and in the aftermath of the Myanmar military’s atrocities against the Rohingya in 2016 and 2017. As the ICJ hearings proceed, it is critical to center the views and perspectives, as well as the diverse experiences of and impact on the Rohingya community. Governments that are intervening in the case also had an opportunity to offer remarks about the case’s significance.
