Bhutto waving and clapping STORYLINE Benazir Bhutto, two-time prime minister and scion of Pakistan's pre-eminent political family, is expected to arrive in Karachi on Thursday, eight years after she left the country to avoid arrest on graft charges. Her Pakistan People's Party (PPP) hopes to draw enormous crowds out onto the streets of the country's biggest city to give her a spectacular welcome and launch its campaign for parliamentary polls in January. Paid for by supporters, thousands of billboards, flags and banners welcoming their leader back to Pakistan have been put up all over the port city. Tens of thousands more posters are being printed as quickly as the presses can run. Bhutto's return from exile will put a political survivor back on centre stage and carry Pakistan past an important marker on the way to civilian rule. Pakistan People's Party Sindh leader Syed Qaim Ali Shah hopes Bhutto will get a huge turnout on the streets. Every night certain neighbourhoods in Karachi are alive to the sound of drums as workers sing and dance, ecstatic their leader is coming back. "We are welcoming our sister Benazir Bhutto on her return to Pakistan. Welcome! Welcome," said Bhutto supporter Mohammed Isa at a recent celebration.
