How Does Ibuprofen Work?

How does Ibuprofen relieve pain? Is it safe to use? What are the risks? These are the questions that I will be answering today! Do you struggle with depression? It acts to inhibit the Cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme to inhibit the production of prostaglandins which normally promote pain and inflammation. When COX is inhibited, prostaglandins levels are reduced and pain and inflammation is suppressed. This is a similar mechanism of action to Paracetamol. The difference is that Ibuprofen also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a more appropriate drug for the treatment of muscle pain and arthritis. Ibuprofen also reduces your risk of suffering from deadly blood clots, so it is a pretty good drug...but there are some side effects! Ibuprofen is known to cause headaches, constipation, diarrhoea, itchiness and stomach pain. The COX enzyme has many roles throughout the body, and by inhibiting it broadly with NSAID drugs like Ibuprofen, there are many different side effects. An important risk with Ibuprofen is that it can cross the placental lining, meaning if you are pregnant, you should not use Ibuprofen or Aspirin because they can impact on your unborn child. So in summary, Ibuprofen prevents prostaglandin production by inhibiting COX. As a result, fever, pain and inflammation are reduced, blood clotting risk is lowered, but you are at risk of damaging your gut lining and injuring any fetus that may be present.
