The Church of St Cunera in Rhenen stands on a site that has had a religious function since very early times. It is likely that a wooden church already existed here in the 8th or 9th century, connected to the early Christianization of the Rhine region. This early church was later replaced by a stone predecessor, probably a Romanesque church that served as the parish church for Rhenen and its surroundings. No visible remains of this Romanesque building have survived, but archaeological traces and written sources confirm its existence. During the 14th century, Rhenen developed into an important pilgrimage center due to the veneration of Saint Cunera. The existing church proved too small to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims. At the beginning of the 15th century, it was therefore decided to construct a new and larger church. Construction likely began around 1492, partly on and around the foundations of the earlier church. The present Church of St Cunera is a late Gothic hall church, built primarily of brick with natural stone details. The building consists of a wide central nave with two side aisles of nearly equal height, creating an open and unified interior space. The choir is deep and polygonal in shape, a characteristic feature of late Gothic churches in the Lower Rhine region. Buttresses and large pointed-arch windows were designed to support the weight of the high vaults. The tower is a prominent feature of the Church of St Cunera. The lower parts of the tower are older and may originate from the Romanesque predecessor church. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the tower was raised and adapted to match the new Gothic church. In addition to housing the bells, the tower served as a landmark in the surrounding landscape and as a symbol of the town’s religious and civic status. Construction progressed in stages and was frequently interrupted by financial difficulties and political unrest. Nevertheless, the nave was largely completed in the first half of the 16th century, thanks in part to income generated by the pilgrimage devoted to Saint Cunera. The interior was richly furnished with altars, paintings, and stained-glass windows, many of which were donated by guilds and pilgrims. After the Reformation in 1578, the church passed into Protestant hands. The Catholic system of worship disappeared: altars were removed, the relics of Saint Cunera were lost, and the interior was adapted to suit Reformed services. The church, however, continued to function as the parish church, now for the Reformed congregation of Rhenen. In the centuries that followed, the church suffered various forms of damage. Lightning strikes, fires, and storms particularly affected the roof and tower. Due to limited financial resources, repairs were often carried out in a modest manner, resulting in visible differences in masonry and construction. From the 19th century onward, greater attention was paid to monument preservation. Restoration campaigns focused on stabilizing walls and vaults, repairing the roof, and conserving late Gothic details. Efforts were made to preserve the medieval structure without reconstructing the building in an idealized historical form. Today, the church is a Protestant city church and a listed national monument. The building clearly displays the succession of predecessor churches, medieval construction phases, and later modifications. As such, the church is not only a place of worship, but also a tangible record of more than a thousand years of ecclesiastical and architectural history in Rhenen.
