The Red-breasted Nuthatch resides year-round in evergreen forests across much of Canada, and the northeastern and western United States. They show up at feeders across the U.S. during certain winters when natural food supplies are poor. Let's learn how to entice them to your setup. Food Types: Nuthatches are quick to visit feeders offering black-oil sunflower seeds. Hulled seeds aren't as messy but tend to spoil faster without the shell. Shelled peanuts and peanut hearts are a protein-rich food and a favorite of Red-breasted Nuthatches and other birds. Most suet is beef kidney fat. It can be purchased as a processed cake that includes seeds, berries, insects, and other ingredients. Feeder Types: Small tube feeders offer multiple small feeding ports with short perches. These feeders accommodate nuthatches but exclude larger birds. Suet feeders that are only accessible from the bottom reserve suet for birds that are able to feed by clinging upside down, like nuthatches. Platform feeders attract Red-breasted Nuthatches and many other species of birds. Add a roof to prevent snow and rain from dampening seeds. Landscaping tips: Red-breasted Nuthatches eat the seeds of conifers like pine, spruce, fir, and hemlock, as well as the insects that live in their bark.
