When people refer to Yu Garden, they usually mean the Yu Garden itself, the Yu Garden Shopping Center, and the City God Temple area. This area is also a popular destination for tourists visiting Shanghai. Yu Garden was originally built during the Jiajing and Wanli periods of the Ming Dynasty, over 450 years ago, and is the most prominent of the five classical gardens still existing in Shanghai. It was initially a private garden created by Pan Yunduan, the son of Pan En, the Minister of Justice of the Ming Dynasty, to provide a peaceful retreat for his father in his later years. Yu Garden exemplifies the artistic style of southern gardens from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, characterized by tranquility, elegance, and intricate beauty. The garden houses a significant collection of ancient trees, Ming and Qing furniture, famous calligraphy and paintings, clay sculptures, brick carvings, plaques, and couplets. These treasures encapsulate the rich essence of traditional Chinese cultural art. The Yu Garden Shopping Center originated from the Old City God Temple market during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. Through multiple transformations and developments, it has evolved into a commercial district centered around Yu Garden, offering a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The district is home to numerous long-established Chinese brands and well-known Shanghai trademarks, providing visitors with convenient shopping and dining experiences.
