I was sitting in a restaurant, minding my business. A group of white guys kept glancing in my direction. Not aggressively. Not obvious. Just enough to register. If you’ve ever walked into a room and been the only one who looks like you, you know that switch. Awareness turns on. You start checking the exits. Reading the room. Measuring energy. Eventually they got up to leave. They had to walk past me. One of them says, “Weren’t you playing on stage at the baseball game?” A week earlier I had played in a televised halftime show. Side musician gig. Nothing major. They weren’t sizing me up. They were trying to remember where they’d seen me. That moment stayed with me. Not because awareness was wrong. But because finishing the story before it’s finished can carry a weight that isn’t always necessary. I’ve lived in towns across Central and Eastern Europe where weeks go by without seeing another Black face. Awareness becomes second nature. You don’t turn it off. But there’s a balance. Staying aware keeps you safe. Staying flexible lets you live. This isn’t about ignoring reality. It’s about letting the moment reveal itself before you decide what it is. Like a rearview mirror. You glance. You adjust. You keep moving. #Awareness #TravelAbroad #BlackAbroad #CulturalPerspective #Mindset #LivingOverseas #PersonalGrowth
