Hi, welcome to Deaf Talks news. The Nepal government recently banned 26 social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and X (Twitter). Because they failed to register under the rules of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology. Soon after this announcement youth got angry and started to protest. Mass protests erupted in Kathmandu, surrounding the Parliament building and other key government offices. When protesters tried to enter Parliament, police opened fire to control the situation. 19 people were killed and Over 300 injured. In response to the tragedy, Nepal’s Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned. Taking moral responsibility, he submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Sharma Oli. The emergency meeting was called and all the ministers attended. The meeting went till midnight and they lifted the ban on social media. Prime Minister Sharma Oli, said: Government’s actions and the lack of clear communication with the youth generation led to this unfortunate incident. The government’s intention was not to restrict social media, but to ensure a safe and regulated environment for its use. Meanwhile, curfew orders have been imposed in Kathmandu, including near Parliament, the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Presidential residence, to prevent further unrest. But 19 people have lost their lives. Sad. Thanks for watching our news.
