Highlights of a flight from Manchester (Barton) to Carlisle and back on 26th February 2024. The aircraft is G-GURU, a privately-owned PA28-161 based at Barton. A couple of apologies. Firstly, I regret that we didn’t spot the dirty windscreen that was very much in the field of view from the right hand seat. Secondly, I couldn’t find anywhere satisfactory to mount the GoPro so the footage is all using it hand-held. One consequence is that the cockpit audio is intermittent. I have refrained from putting music on the clips where there is no cockpit audio so we just get the ambient aircraft noise. We routed direct to Carlisle in one long, straight line. After Barton we got a basic service from Warton then London Information before talking to Carlisle Radio who could not have been more helpful. When we were on their frequency but not recording, there was a very entertaining exchange between the Tower and a pilot about deer on the airfield. Thankfully, they were no longer a factor when we landed. The setup for GA visitors at Carlisle has changed markedly since my previous visit. I have included a few still photographs of the facilities which are very new and impressive. Drinks and snacks are available but no hot food although perhaps that may follow. (I have a vague memory that more food was on offer when it was the terminal for the Stobart commercial operation which is now defunct.) Our route back was to the Cumbria coast then over the Barrow/Walney Island ATZ, across Morecambe Bay to Fleetwood, down the Fylde Coast then Southport Pier, Middlebrook Stadium and back to Barton. We encountered a bit of rain towards the end of the return leg but nothing untoward. All in all, a great flight with stunning views both ways and a very pleasant break at Carlisle.
