The 30 for 30 series, developed by the Imigani Project in collaboration with IGIHE and featuring 30 Rwandan artists from different generations, marks the 30th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi. Each narrative probes the deep-seated impact of the Genocide, highlighting how the arts offer a depth of insight and emotional resonance beyond what traditional forms of reporting and documentation, such as news articles, history books, and documentaries, can provide. As such, the arts are portrayed as a powerful tool for understanding and processing the emotional aftermath of genocide, offering perspectives that are more nuanced and emotionally impactful than those found in more conventional sources of information. This episode features Mariya Yohana Mukankuranga, a cultural icon known for her significant contributions to the liberation struggle through her music. Her path in music is deeply intertwined with the history of Rwanda, particularly during the early 1990s liberation struggle. 'Intsinzi', composed in 1992, is celebrated for its uplifting message following the Rwanda Patriotic Front's efforts to end the genocide. Another significant work, 'Urugamba Rurashyushye', was instrumental in motivating the RPF fighters during the liberation struggle. During this struggle, she tragically lost five sons on the front lines, a loss that profoundly influenced her music, infusing her songs with themes of resilience and hope amidst suffering. In this episode, Mariya Yohana shares her reflections on the sacrifices and bravery of the young soldiers who took on the mission to liberate their country. These powerful reminders of the cost of freedom emphasise the importance of passing down these stories to younger generations, ensuring that the history and lessons learned are not forgotten. Her narrative highlights the bravery of those who fought and the need for continued remembrance and gratitude for the peace achieved.
