Contact your local social security office for further details. Medicare Part A is your hospital insurance. Medicare Part B is your outpatient insurance. Together, they cover a good portion of your health needs. Generally speaking Medicare will cover about 80% of your costs, leaving you with about 20%. As with all health insurance, you should be aware of the following costs: Premiums Deductibles Copays/Coinsurance Out of pocket Maximums Every year costs do tend to increase to accommodate for inflation and rising healthcare costs. Most people do not pay a premium for Medicare Part A. If you’ve qualified through your employment history or your spouse’s employment history, there is no monthly premium. However, if you haven’t quite met that 40 quarters, there may be a monthly premium to be aware of. If you don’t meet the criteria for a $0 premium for Medicare Part A, in 2021, your premium will jump from $458 to $471 if you’ve worked less than 30 quarters. If you’ve worked between 30 & 39 quarters, the new monthly premium is $259 (previously $252) Part B’s premium is determined by your income. Based on your bracket, you’ll pay a different monthly premium. This will be determined by your tax returns (usually the two years prior). Check out this link for an exact breakdown: https://www.medicare.gov/your-medicar... Remember, that if your income has significantly decreased you can fill out form SSA-44 to appeal. https://www.ssa.gov/forms/ssa-44-ext.pdf Your deductible is your out of pockets cost before your insurance kicks in. In 2020, the deductible for Part A was $1408. In 2021, it will be $1484. This is not a one time deductible that must be met, but rather it is applied to a “benefit period”. With Medicare Part A, your coinsurance also varies. For the first 60 days of your benefit period, your coinsurance will be $0. After that, you’ll be charged. Medicare Part B works differently. You must meet your deductible only once before your insurance kicks in. In 2020, the deductible was $198, in 2021, it will be 203; a pretty minor increase. After you’ve met your deductible, you’ll be responsible for approximately 20% of Medicare covered services. Remember, doctors and hospitals can choose to charge up to 15% more than what Medicare is willing to cover. If you do not have an advantage plan or a supplement plan that will cover these excess charges, you’ll be responsible for them. Unfortunately, neither Medicare Part A nor Medicare Part B has out of pocket maximums. This is one of the reasons people choose to supplement their coverage with a Medicare Supplement Plan or replace their Original Medicare with a Medicare Advantage Plan. For Medicare Part A & B, you can also enroll during the General Open Enrollment Period. That’s every year from Jan 1-March 31. You’ll need to contact social security to do so.
