Orthodox-Jacobite conflict; Varikkoli church temporarily closed| Mathrubhumi News

Varikkoli: The Varikkoli church has been temporarily closed down due to the conflict that took place between the Orthodox and Jacobite factions here on Sunday. Revenue Divisional Officer reached the cpot and sealed the church. The close down is in the wake of the existing tensions in the area. Catholica Bava of Orthodox faction who was held up inside the church was released amid police security. Earlier, the Jacobite faction had blocked him at the church. The Bava had come to the church for the Mass and he was stopped while returning. Hundreds of people gathered at the gate and locked it from outside with Bava and some others inside. Since last week, the Mass is conducted by the Orthodox faction at the church. The Supreme Court of India last week ruled that the 1935 Constitution of the Malankara Church should be followed and that the Jacobite faction had no right to offer prayers at the disputed churches such as Varikkoli church, Kolencherry Church and St Mary’s Churches at Mannathur. Tensions started when the Antakya throne symbol here was hidden after painting. At the same time the Jacobites have brushed aside allegations that they had blocked Bava and said they had provided means for him to move out. Meanwhile, the Orthodox faction alleged that the government and police failed in providing security to Bava. On the other day, parish priest Biju Elias was beaten up at the same church in a dispute related to the same issue.
