In this episode of Fud’s Back Yard, I wrap up the initial cutting and piling of larger buckthorn trees, stacking what will become a long-term burn pile. While there is still plenty of buckthorn across the property, this marks a turning point in how I’ll approach the remaining work. It’s not about removing everything. Part of responsible land stewardship is knowing what to leave. Standing dead trees provide habitat for insects, birds, and other wildlife, and some areas will remain intentionally undisturbed. I also take a closer look at a buckthorn leaning into the marsh. What I first thought was dead turns out to be pushing out vigorous water-sprout growth. I remove those shoots with the plan to treat the trunk where they emerged, shifting from cutting to more targeted methods like herbicide treatment and girdling. This is less a finish line than a change in tactics—moving toward a more balanced, long-term approach to managing the landscape.
