Yamunotri Dham, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, is the westernmost and the first shrine to be visited in the revered Char Dham Yatra (the four most sacred pilgrimages in the Himalayas: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath). Deity and Significance: The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the personification of the Yamuna River, the second most sacred river in India after the Ganga. Legend holds that a holy dip in the Yamuna River protects one from untimely death. Goddess Yamuna is considered the daughter of Surya Dev (Sun God) and the sister of Yama (God of Death). Location and Access: Situated in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of approximately 3,293 meters, the temple is perched atop a flank of the Bandarpunch peak. The actual source of the river, the Yamunotri Glacier (Champasar Glacier), is further up and less accessible, so the shrine itself is located at the foot of the hill. Pilgrims typically trek from Janki Chatti to reach the temple. Key Attractions: Yamunotri Temple: Houses a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna. Surya Kund and Gauri Kund: Natural thermal springs near the temple. The boiling hot water of Surya Kund is often used by pilgrims to cook rice and potatoes as prasad (sanctified offering). Divya Shila: A sacred rock pillar near the Surya Kund, which is worshipped before entering the temple. Closing: The temple remains open from Akshaya Tritiya (around May) and closes on Yama Dwitiya (the second day after Diwali, around November) for the winter season, when the deity is shifted to the winter abode at Kharsali village. 🔱 Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Uttarkashi While making your way to Yamunotri Dham in Uttarkashi, you can also visit the historic Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the main town of Uttarkashi. Significance: Uttarkashi itself is often referred to as 'Saumya Kashi' or 'Kashi of the North,' and this temple holds immense religious importance, dedicated to Lord Shiva (Vishwanath means 'Lord of the Universe'). It is considered a crucial stop for devotees on their pilgrimage. Architecture and History: The temple is built in the traditional Himalayan style, primarily of stone and wood. It is said to have been originally built by Sage Parashurama and later renovated by Maharani Khaneti Devi of Tehri in the 19th century. The Shivling: The main deity is a self-manifested Shivling (a representation of Lord Shiva) that is unique as it is believed to be slightly tilted towards the south (Dakshin Mukhi). Shakti Temple & Trident: Right in front of the main temple is the Shakti Temple, which houses a massive, approximately 19.5-foot-high metal Trishul (trident). This ancient trident is a major attraction, said to represent the power of Goddess Shakti (Durga) and bearing ancient inscriptions.
