Pulmonologist, Dr Emmanuel Taban, was thrust into the spotlight after pioneering a revolutionary method of removing mucous from the lungs of critically ill Covid patients in South Africa. But it’s not just this that makes him extraordinary. It’s his journey to this point, which is amazing. Taban grew up in war-torn South Sudan. As a teenager, he fled a Muslim school where he was held captive and slowly made his way to South Africa, where he decided to pursue an education, despite having nothing but the clothes on his back. I spoke to the doctor about his indomitable spirit, how he managed never to give up and his dogged pursuit to make a difference. In Part One, we talk about how he left South Sudan and his desire to go to school.
