We've all had blood drawn or urine collected for medical tests at some point, but what exactly happens in the medical laboratory? And how does the lab determine what's in a person's blood? This brickfilm documentary aims to provide an overview of the work performed by MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientists), a moderately detailed explanation of the common test methods done in hospital and reference laboratories, and an explanation of the purpose of commonly-ordered laboratory tests. This brickfilm documentary is intended for the curious audience - for those who want to know what happens behind the scenes during a medical visit. But even more so, this documentary aims to give an in-depth view of the medical laboratory science profession to those who are interested in pursuing such a career, especially those in high-school or college. Though often behind the scenes, the medical laboratory scientists are actually a critical part of the healthcare team - without the lab, doctors would not be able to diagnose patients as they do. Though the pain and discomfort of a needle under the skin is unpleasant, this documentary will show the hard work that goes behind testing blood and the importance of doing such clinical tests. It should be noted that each laboratory may have different instruments and methods of running the same tests. This documentary outlines most of the common methods utilized. Keep in mind, the layout of each laboratory is different, and the layout used in this brickfilm is just an example of a possible layout. Additionally, the level of detail provided in this documentary is sufficient to get a basic understanding of the concepts, but is in no way the complete picture. Directed by Denis B. MLS, and based on direct experience, facts, and knowledge obtained in MLS school.
