Éric Fassin is a professor of sociology in the Gender Studies Department and the Political Science Department at Université Paris 8 Vincennes – Saint-Denis. A graduate of the École normale supérieure (Paris) and agrégé in English, he co-founded the first CNRS Laboratory for Gender and Sexuality Studies (LEGS) in 2015 and is now affiliated with Sophiapol (Paris Nanterre). A senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) since 2021, he is regularly a visited professor at numerous international universities. His publications include La Savante et le politique. Ce que le féminisme fait aux sciences sociales (with Caroline Ibos, 2025), Misère de l’anti-intellectualisme. Du procès en wokisme au chantage à l’antisémitisme (2025), State Anti-Intellectualism and the Politics of Gender & Race (2024) and Populisme : le grand ressentiment (2017). His research focuses on sexuality, gender, racial issues, and democratic dynamics. He analyzes the politicization of minority issues, debates surrounding so-called “gender ideology,” immigration and national identity policies, as well as contemporary reconfigurations of populism. At the intersection of scholarly research and political activism, his work examines the political uses of cultural representations and the current forms of anti-intellectualism. In this conversation recorded in Paris on the 28th of November 2025, we revisit with him the influence of certain French novelists on the imagination of the contemporary far right. From Jean Raspail to Renaud Camus and Michel Houellebecq, Fassin traces the genealogy of the “Great Replacement” slogan, its transatlantic circulation, and its appropriation by political and criminal actors. He analyzes Camus and Houellebecq’s strategic use of language, their instrumentalization of irony, the evolution of their worldview, as well as their professed admiration for the Israeli model. Finally, the interview explores internal tensions within radical right movements and the competing imaginaries that structure white supremacism today.
