Many remarkable tributes have been coming out this year, and we wanted to add our own contribution to the mix, signaling the importance of the earliest, foundational elements of hip hop - break-dancing, graffiti writing, DJ-ing, rapping/emceeing. In hip hop's formative years, these elements were interdependent and each collectively worked to push the limits of creativity and innovation. However, with time, the cohesion of the collective partially disintegrated as each genre continually evolved and forged their own distinct identities and communities. Our song in some ways is a lament to such disintegration, and we are using the metaphor of a smoke signal to raise awareness of the importance of the collective as a whole in hopes that we will see in our time a reawakening of some of these formative expressions that have gone dormant. The culture is worth preserving, and though it continually evolves there still is something important about being rooted in your craft - appreciating the forerunners and foundational developments that have brought us into the present.
