Junky Bluelight Blues (2007) Note from Ryan: After recording "The Birds Forgot To Migrate," I ended my "Minnetonka" project and began "The Ten Thousand Dollar Tattoo." Having put a band-aid solution over a deep wound, I nonetheless felt that a new era was beginning and my music needed a new name. The TT&T was a reference to a euphamism I heard somewhere about the financial cost and physical scars caused by chronic intravenous drug use. Having traded needles for the relative stability of methadone maintenance, I wanted to tell stories about my experiences with hard drugs, and it was my intention to be brutally honest. However, as my twenties progressed without me confronting the roots of my problems, I descended into a pattern of partying and hedonism, total relapse, partial recovery, restlessness leading to partying and hedonism, and so on... Throughout this cycle, I continued to record songs and albums under the Tentatt handle. Around the year 2006, I entered the period I referred to as the "Junkie Bluelight Blues" sessions. I believe that by this time, the substances and accompanying lifestyle had taken control of me, already a stubborn host, to the point where I had adopted a worldview that defended them and condemned those that actually cared about the well being of myself and those around me. There is an abundance of delusional thinking and excuse making on these tracks, and there is an plethora of material that was even more extreme, causing me to ultimately disown many songs completely. That being said, within what became "Junkie Bluelight Blues," an occasional ray of light, in the form of sparks of self-awareness and remorse, can be heard poking through the cracks of my broken thinking. When we are children, we need only the love of our protectors, food, shelter, and the wonders of life itself to make us happy. For those of us lucky enough to have received these blessings, we should never take them for granted, as I certainly often did in the past. Much love, dear listener.
