The Biography of Imam Abd al-Rahman al-Awza'i and his intellectual legacy. One of the greatest jurists of Islamic law and represents and earlier tradition of Islamic law during the Umayyad Caliphate, which predates the canonical four madhhabs we know today. He lived during the collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate, which he worked so closely with. He witnessed the Abassid revolution and was still respected for his scholarship, consulted by Abbasid authorities, and given a stipend by the state. Whereas his legal colleague, Sufyan al-Thawri, refused to work with the Abassids and spend his last years in hiding from the new Islamic state. / hamzathehistorian Steven C. 'Amr al-Awza'i (c.707-774) was Umayyad Syria's most influential jurist, part of a generation of scholars who began establishing the first formal structures for the preservation and dissemination of religious knowledge. Following the Abbasid revolution, they provided a point of stability in otherwise unstable times. Despite his close ties to the old regime, al-Awza'i continued to participate in legal and theological matters in the Abbasid era. Although his immediate impact would prove short-lived, his influence on aspects of Islamic law, particularly the laws of war, endures to this day. imam al awza'i
