Filmmaker, writer, and producer Anurag Kashyap has made a career out of defying Bollywood’s rules, from writing the gritty screenplay for Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya (1998) to directing the cult classic Gangs of Wasseypur (which many have called India’s answer to The Godfather) and Netflix India’s Sacred Games (with longtime collaborator Vikramaditya Motwane). Off screen, he speaks his mind, critiquing even the most powerful. We sat down with the auteur to chat about mastering the art of cinema, why he’s so angry with Netflix (it’s not the reason you think), and his upcoming film Nishaanchi. In true Kashyap fashion, he swore freely, joked loudly, and spoke bluntly about everything from what’s gone wrong with Indian cinema to why he’s hopeful its glory days will return. 0:00 — Intro + DVDs 2:00 — Censorship Frustrations 6:00 — Writing by Hand & Language Politics 10:00 — Star Power vs. Creative Hunger 14:00 — Indie vs. Instagram 18:00 — The Art of Adaptation 22:00 — Beef with Netflix 25:00 — Biggest Heartbreak 27:00 — Father of the Bride 30:00 — Vikramaditya Motwane 33:00 — Future of Hindi Cinema 36:00 — Nepo Babies 39:00 — Industry Shifts 41:30 — This or That 43:50 — Upcoming Films 46:30 — Final Thoughts & Shoutouts Subscribe to The Juggernaut at https://www.thejuggernaut.com/subscribe Follow The Juggernaut on Instagram @_thejuggernaut The Juggernaut is a New York-based media company and community focused on telling powerful South Asian stories.
