Rail Bhawan is the headquarters of the Indian Railways which is located at Raisina Road, New Delhi, near the Sansad Bhavan (Parliament House). The office of Minister of Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State, Railways Shri Ravneet Singh and Shri V. Somanna is in the Rail Bhavan, along with the Railway Board, comprising 7 members headed by Chairman Railway Board, Shri Satish Kumar. Lord Dalhousie is known as the founder of the Indian Railways. He was the Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856. The first passenger rail in India ran between Bombay and Thane on April 16, 1853 John Mathai served as its first minister from 1947 till 1948. On 22 September 1948, Gopalaswamy Ayyangar was appointed as the minister of the newly renamed Ministry of Railways and Transport. The first female Minister of Railways of India was Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee served as Minister from 1999 until 2001. Indian Railways is divided into 19 administrative zones and 71 operating divisions inclunding Kolkata Metro . Each zone is led by a general manager, and each division is led by a divisional railway manager (DRM). The Northern Railway is the largest zone, while the North-Eastern zone is the smallest.
