Cannon booms, grenade explosions, howitzer and heavy machine gun fire resounded at regular intervals early on Saturday afternoon outside the villages of Vaksince and Slupcane, where troops are trying to drive out the rebels after a week of ambush attacks against soldiers. A military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the army appeared to have hit a house believed to have served as a rebel command post. There was no immediate word on whether there were any casualties. Macedonian authorities urged civilians to evacuate villages in the fighting area about 25 kilometres (15 miles) north of the capital, Skopje. But a government spokesman said only about 150 women and children managed to leave Slupcane after bribing the rebels with cash and jewellery. Helicopter gun ships fired on suspected rebel positions in the region on Friday and there were unconfirmed reports of civilian casualties in the offensive - the largest government assault since fighting between security forces and the rebels subsided in late March. The army launched its assault after two of its soldiers were killed and a third abducted in a rebel ambush on Thursday. A week ago, eight members of an elite government unit were killed in another ambush, raising tension in the Balkan country where minority ethnic Albanians are demanding greater rights and recognition. NATO and the European Union, fearing fresh bloodshed, prepared to send their top envoys to Macedonia. The E-U's security affairs chief, Javier Solana, will arrive in the country on Sunday for meetings with Macedonian leaders. NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson will join him on Monday.
