Although current camera systems can assist in identifying animal handling issues, they have significant limitations. In practice, slaughterhouses only review a random selection of the extensive hours of daily video footage, resulting in most of it going unseen. To address this shortcoming and enhance the monitoring of animal welfare within slaughterhouses, Deloitte, in collaboration with Eyes On Animals, VION, and The Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA), has developed an innovative camera surveillance system called AI4A (Artificial Intelligence for Animals). The AI4A algorithm automatically selects video recordings that potentially contain animal welfare concerns, such as excessive use of herding tools, distressed animals, violence towards animals, and poor stunning. These selected videos are presented through a dashboard for review and, if necessary, escalation. This enables slaughterhouse employees to assess the footage and take appropriate corrective actions immediately. The smart cameras are currently implemented in over 20 slaughterhouses. The video provides a summary of the development and benefits of AI4A.
